![]() Fertility & Pregnancy Acupuncture and Aromatherapy in Cobham, SurreyAcupuncture and aromatherapy are well established nowadays as effective treatments for a wide range of conditions. Over the years as an acupuncturist and aromatherapist, I have developed highly effective treatments and work exclusively in these areas:In Cobham my focus is women's health, fertility acupuncture, pregnancy and pre-birth acupuncture and holistic dermatology. I use the best treatment options for each person for maximum benefit but when I feel I can't help, I never hesitate to recommend others who may. My colleague, Olivia Shaw, works with me on Tuesdays and as well as providing acupuncture, is qualified and insured to prescribe pre-prepared herbal formulas for patients who wish to add this to their treatment. In cases where I think it will speed the progress of treatment, I will recommend that Olivia is seen for a herbal prescription. As a practitioner with special interests, I have a wealth of experience to draw on and I'm able to provide individualised, expert care, with the kind of understanding and depth of knowledge that comes from working in these fields. For general practice, I have excellent colleagues to whom I refer when necessary, so if you are looking to use acupuncture and Chinese medicine for other health matters, then please contact me and I can help to find you the right person for your needs. ![]() My background and trainingI qualified in aromatherapy and reflexology in 1995 and went on to study acupuncture and Chinese medicine, gaining a Licentiate in Acupuncture in 1998. Although it is often recognised as a method of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving an individual's overall well being, rather than just treating the symptoms of illness. According to Oriental philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians or pathways running throughout the body. In any session of acupuncture I insert very fine needles into the meridians of energy, causing a stimulus and encouraging the body's own healing response, thus helping to restore its natural balance. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors, which I determine in each consultation and treatment session. My principal aim when providing acupuncture is to treat the whole person to recover the harmony between their physical, emotional and spiritual realms. This is never more important than when trying to conceive and my fertility acupuncture treatments focus closely on this. As a traditional acupuncturist, I'm sometimes asked what the difference is between my work and acupuncture given by doctors and physios. Here's a summary of some of the key differences: Traditional Professional Acupuncture - it takes 3 years of degree level training to qualify (approximately 3600 hrs) - is a profession in its own right, not an adjunct to other therapies - treats most conditions - treats holistically - the emotions are as important as any physical problems - addresses the causes of any problems as well as the symptoms - is rooted in millenia of experience and knowledge - a complete system of medicine that's stood the test of time Medical Acupuncture - is learned over a very short time (around 80 hours) - is used to suuplement another therapy (e.g. physiotherapy, osteopathy, medicine) - effectively treats a narrow range of symptoms but doesn't address the causes - focuses on the physical condition not the accompanying emotions (tackles the bad back, not the stress, depression or worry this causes) AromatherapyAromatherapy is the art and science of using natural aromatic extracts from plants to treat a range of disorders and promote the overall health of an individual. Extracts that I use include essential oils, which are highly aromatic, pharmacologically active essences, vegetable oils and floral waters, which are also known as hydrosols or hydrolats. A holistic non-invasive intervention, aromatherapy is both a preventative as well as an active treatment. Treatment sessions with me may involve massage, although this is not necessarily always the case, as aromatherapy includes the selected use of preparations for non-massage applications such as creams, lotions or inhalations. I make full use of a range of application methods for optimum benefit and may suggest some for home use following a consultation. This is especially likely when I am treating skin disorders. If aromatherapy is combined with acupuncture, it greatly assists the body's natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself and the combination of acupuncture and aromatherapy is one of my main approaches in dermatological care. ![]() Women's Wellness AcupunctureIn addition to fertility support acupuncture, many women see me for help with their general reproductive health.
